10th International Famagusta Culture and Art Festival
6th- 26th July 2006

International Famagusta Art and Culture Festival has been organized with the collaboration of Famagusta Municipality and Eastern Mediterranean University.

The Festival intends to make Northern Cyprus privileged for international art works and also to be the centre with cultural and art dimension in Mediterranean region which contains historical remainders and cultural signs of various civilizations.

In general, the art perception of the festival is to give place to new works and also try to reflect the accumulation of world culture which has historical accumulation in the concept of multicultural.

From this point of view, apart from the general anxieties, it is important to show the determination of power and the limitless of the art creativity in the name of the festival.

It can be said that, at the end of 9 years, it is seen utmost interest in the festival for Turkish Cypriot performers and the other performers from different parts of the world.

The festival consists of a wide variety of activities including panel-conference-symposium that are particularly related to music, theatre-performance and the plastic arts. Beside of this, Classical, Jazz, Etno-jazz, Hip Hop, Groove, Reggae, World Music, Ethnic Music are the music categories in the festival.

Moreover, a lot of performers from different parts of the world, guested on this festival so far. The performers such as Goran Bregovich, Paco Pena, Los Paraguayos, Berlin Art Ensemble, David Russel, Kemal Belevi, Ferhan Sensoy, Monica Molina, Genco Erkal, Zalihe Berksoy, Aswad, Wax Poetic, Burhan Ocal, Asia Minor, Senol Filiz-Birol Yayla Duo, Belarussian Ballet Company, Aqua Levi&Roots Imension,Valentin Rozantsev, Yildiz Ibrahimova, Ersen Sururi, Bülent Ortaçgil, Can Tufan, Timur Selçuk, Nilüfer, Ali Akay, Emre Zeytinoglu, Andreas Haralambous, Muammer Ketencoglu, winkle Brothers, Christian Willisohn Band, Ensemble Baroque, Amelita Baltar, Teoman, Artis Quartet Vienna, Kent Oyunculari-Yildiz Kenter, Sandimay Street Theatre Company, Aydin Esen-Randy Esen Duo, The Master Meeting which consists of Yildiz İbrahimova-İvo Papazow-Suat Berkay and Ahmet Özden, Telvin Trio which consists of Erkan Ogur-Turgut Alp Bekoglu and Ismail Soyberk, Joshua Redman Quartet and Tango Turco have participated individually or as group in the festival.

Beside of its international characteristic, the festival is accepted the best activity series by the most important media and art authorities so far because of the quality and also the quantity of the festival. For instance, the 8th festival, has directly reached more than 30 thousand people through a wide variety of activities of the festival. And, this 30 thousand people certify that this festival is the pretty important and also the privileged culture organization for Cyprus.

The festival's role in Famagusta's bid to become the 'cultural capital' of the island is great. According to the investigations, the festival causes an intensive interest of lovers of art from all regions of Northern Cyprus. As well as this, it is seen very much interests of the touristic groups which come to Cyprus for holiday, for a short time.

2004 is the important year of being aimed much more achievements for the festival with the experiences that gained so far. Besides of Turkish and Cyprus media, it is possible to meet this festival in American media as well.

It is worth of attention to be defined by art authorities as a distinguished and high quality festival which passed over the dimension of the tiny island, Cyprus.

For Turkish Cypriots, who have modern and high cultured level, the festival has been forming its own unique crowd of people and also it has being one of the important destinations in the name of culture-art in a year.

Some towns remain unreached until the symbols they keep in their deepest parts are discovered. Famagusta is such a town. It seems to be hiding the trace of masters like Shakespeare and Leonardo da Vinci beyond the high walls covering it as a long dress with the unique beauty of the historical places for the years. Famagusta is certainly worth visiting not only because of its magnificent history to being a 'sea-port town' but also because of its international art and culture festival.
